One of my artistic inspirations- Alexander McQueen (see right from one of my favorite shows S/S '99) was really big on that, staying true to his Scottish roots and taking us into worlds we could never have imagined with his beautiful clothes. In the short time I've been in London, I've started to learn that it's about creativity and being who you really are - whether you dress only in minimalist solids, or in contrasting prints, or are secretly into The Only Way is Essex!
A great credit also goes to Kate Middleton, the new "people's princess", who made it ok to be elegant and classic again - and fashionable to wear Reiss dresses and mix it up with a little Erdem every now and then! At times her choices do seem safe, but she does seem like she is sending a message of authenticity - she is practical yet knows her growing importance in the public realm. A balance of aspiration and reality - perfect for what the fashion world needs today, as we rebound from decades of excess and the last few years of worrying economic conditions.

London Overtakes New York as Fashion Capital of the World
London has overtaken New York as the fashion capital of the world for 2011.
A survey by Global Language Monitor, which tracks the frequency of words and phrases across print, electronic and social media has officially awarded London the top spot, which New York had claimed the previous year.
The huge surge in media interest has been fuelled by the Duchess of Cambridge’s stylish wedding and subsequent transformation into a “fashion icon”, and the suicide of British designer, Alexander McQueen.
London and New York are followed by Paris, Milan, LA, and Hong Kong.
Can London hold on to the top spot, post Kate-mania? Well, fashion’s certainly about to have its moment come September. As well as London Fashion Week, fashionistas in the capital can look forward to Vogue Fashion’s Night Out, Carnaby Catwalk,High Street Fashion Week, the London College of Fashion’s much-anticipated College Shop and of course, the arrival of the new Westfield at Stratford. We’re pretty confident Londoners will still be talking about fashion for another month at least…
