The view from the top of San Vigilio, Bergamo |
Bergamo is essentially divided into two sections - Citta Alta (the Old Town) and Citta Delta (more modern). We stayed in the lovely Hotel Petronilla in the Citta Delta area. Upon checking into our room after a long, hot train ride (it was 30 degrees and noon time) - we were welcomed by a lovely tray of Italian biscotti in our room.
After a short rest, we were ready to head out and explore the town. Lots of water, sunscreen, and comforatble walking shoes are recommended to survive the heat. In Bergamo, most people are well-dressed (I love this about Italy!), and it was a pleasure to dress up in sheer summery dresses and espadrilles. I did have to buy a few shoes during this trip, as there were too many "saldi" (sales) in the shops, and I am still searching for that perfect elegant travel shoe (more to come in later posts).
The Old Town is a definite must-see in Bergamo, we accessed it via a furnicular which takes you straight up without having to walk miles, in less than 10 minutes. It was a cute way to travel, except for peak times when hordes of people crammed the little carriages. People in the city all go up to Citta Alta during the weekends, as the weather is much cooler and it's filled with charming shops and restaurants.
The main piazza in Citta Alta was such a beautiful medieval square, surrounded by churches, a museum, and cafes. It's a great spot to people watch, and sip a glass of Prosecco in the afternoon!
It was really inspiring to be in this charming town, and look forward to exploring more of Europe in the coming months ahead...
